Gender Diversity in Policing

It is estimated that approximately 13 percent of sworn law enforcement officers in the United States are women. However, when many executive-level female officers took the oath decades ago, they were joining departments that were unaccustomed to having women in their ranks. Vera Bumpers, Chief of the METRO Police Department of Harris County, Texas and President of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives, discusses her early experiences in law enforcement.
