The Dallas Community Police Awards Committee recognized Senior Corporal Tracy Forsha, #9878, as April’s Officer of the Month.  A luncheon ceremony was held in her honor at the Army and Air Force Exchange Service located at 3911 S. Walton Walker Boulevard, Dallas, Texas.

Senior Corporal Forsha is a nine-year veteran of the department and is currently assigned to the Open Records Unit.  During her career, Senior Corporal Forsha has been assigned to the Northwest Patrol Division, North Central Patrol Division, and the Southeast Patrol Division where she spent time as a Field Training Officer.

TEXAS LEGISLATURE Texas House unanimously endorses Dallas Rep. Victoria Neave’s bill to end state’s rape kit backlog The House on Tuesday gave initial approval to a bill by Dallas lawmaker Victoria Neave that would tackle the state’s rape kit backlog by creating a timeline for testing new kits and mandating an audit to determine the number, status and location of all rape kits in the state. The bill was approved 145-0. It must be voted on by the House one more time before heading to the Senate. “This bill is for all the women who have waited for years for justice, for all the women who pursued justice and were not believed, for all the women whose rape kits sat untested,” Neave said. “Sexual violence pays no mind to party, to wealth, to age or to color. Today we have an opportunity to say: No more. Not one more rape kit untested, lost or destroyed. Not one more shot at justice left untested.”

A northern Texas sheriff says his county has seen a big uptick in methamphetamine and heroin seizures since October, saying Mexican drug smugglers are using large groups of migrants to divert Border Patrol’s attention while they run narcotics over the border in nearby areas.

Dallas DA reveals plan for ‘ending mass incarceration’ for petty crimes, slashing probation and bail

Dallas County will move away from “criminalizing poverty,” District Attorney John Creuzot announced Thursday, outlining a reform plan to decriminalize low-level crimes and decrease the use of excessive probation and bail.

In an open letter to the public, Creuzot detailed his plan to curb overly high bail amounts and stop prosecuting most first-time marijuana offenses and some misdemeanors he believes often stem from poverty.

Police departments should gauge the sentiment of the communities they serve before adopting new law enforcement technologies like unmanned aerial vehicles or artificial intelligence, speakers said at a session on 21st-century policing Friday at the South by Southwest conference in Austin, Texas.

The Boston Police Department, for instance, does not use drones because the technology has not yet earned the public’s trust, said Paul Fitzgerald, the department’s former intelligence and analysis chief.

The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office in central Texas said that it used a thermal imaging drone to help capture a suspect that sheriff’s deputies said was carrying narcotics and had fired on another law enforcement officer earlier this month.

In the early morning of Jan. 5, police from Georgetown were chasing 22-year-old Malik Anthony Rashan Jackovich when Jackovich ditched his car near the San Gabriel River and ran under a bridge, law enforcement officials said. Jackovich fired at police, who called for aid from Williamson County Sheriff’s Department.
